Our Funding Process

United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County (United Way) is committed to working in partnership with others to achieve lasting change on priority issues in our community. United Way provides funding to support strategies in the community that work toward achieving specified goals.

The Community Impact Council is comprised of members of the Board of Directors and representatives from the community at large, including subject matter experts, which review all funding applications and make recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Community Impact Council continues to review funded programs on an annual basis to ensure outcomes are achieved, targets are met, and to identify opportunities for capacity building and improvement.

The Community Impact Council considers the following Community Investment Guiding Principles and Criteria to evaluate funding proposals and review annual progress reports.

Community Investment Criteria

Community organizations wishing to secure United Way support for their programs and services must demonstrate that they meet established United Way criteria in three categories.

  1. Community Need – the proposed program addresses the root causes of “high priority” issues affecting Windsor-Essex County residents.  Proposed programs must align with identified outcomes and best practices, which are established by United Way, and through community consultation.

  2. Program Deliverables and Outcomes – the proposedprogram must meet established deliverables and outcomes. A work plan identifying outcomes, targets and activities is woven into the United Way Funding Agreement and progress is reviewed on an annual basis.

  3. Organizational Capacity and Competence – the agency must demonstrate it has the skills, knowledge, and assets to deliver on the proposed program.
