United Way Announces 2016 I Believe in My Community Award Winners
March 29, 2017
Windsor, ON – On Wednesday, March 29, 2017, United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County welcomed more than 300 guests to celebrate and honour some of its most generous and dedicated supporters and the recipients of the 2016 I Believe in My Community Awards. These prestigious awards are presented annually to workplaces, unions and individuals for outstanding contributions to the community through United Way.
Nine awards were presented to local organizations for their extraordinary giving and community involvement. Taking home this year’s awards were: a local brokerage and shipping company, a municipal utility company, a health benefits company, and a world-travelling philanthropist couple to name a few. To earn their award Green Shield Canada turned their whole campaign into the Emmy awards, complete with a TV guide. Farrow gives every employee 2 paid days off to volunteer in the community. BMO Financial Group raised extra funds at a tailgate party. (see below for full list of winners and award descriptions) In addition to the award recipients selected by the Volunteer Selection Committee, United Way recognized Reliance Home Comfort for the Corporate Community Excellence Award, Windsor Police Association for the Labour Award of Distinction, and Barbara and David Bjarneson for the Leading the Way Award.
“I am very pleased that we have the chance in such a public way to thank each and every workplace, union, sponsor, donor, volunteer and supporter of United Way for all that they do to move people from poverty to possibility,” says Lorraine Goddard, United Way’s CEO. “All of our nominees and award recipients truly care about Windsor-Essex County and have allowed us to help more than 44,200 people right here at home.”
The event was generously sponsored by UNIFOR Local 1959, the 2016 Lead Campaign organization, along with Caesars Windsor, Windsor Star, and AM800 CKLW. Award sponsors include: Caesars Windsor, Windsor Family Credit Union and UNIFOR Locals 200, 444, 1959 and 2458.
“It has truly been a privilege to lead the United Way Board this year and work with our funded partners on strategies to lift people in Windsor-Essex County out of poverty,” says Barry Horrobin. “Without the help of such dedicated and generous workplace partners, like those we are honouring here tonight and all those that were nominated, we would not be making the progress we are.”
