Windsor, ON – Just halfway through the summer, United Way Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent is already seeing a significant increase in the number of local families turning to its Summer Eats for Kids program.
Demand remains high, with every Summer Eats location reaching its full capacity each week. Approximately 1,765 bags of food have been distributed so far, about 10% more than at the same point last year, reflecting the growing financial pressures facing families across Windsor-Essex. While many children look forward to summer break, the season can also mean the loss of reliable access to school meals, leaving parents struggling to fill the gap.
Summer Eats for Kids (presented by SUNSET) helps ensure children continue to receive healthy food while school is out. Families participating in the program receive nutritious food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy snacks and other grocery essentials, along with free books to encourage children to continue reading over the summer months.
“We see the effects of summer hunger every year, and they’re about much more than hungry bellies,” said Jennifer Soulliere, Director of United Way’s Ignite Academy and educator.
“Healthy food is essential for kids to learn, grow and thrive. When students don’t have consistent access to nutritious meals during the summer, it can affect their energy, confidence and readiness to learn when they return to school in September. Summer Eats gives families the support they need during one of the most challenging times of the year.”
The increase in demand comes as many families continue to face rising food costs and financial pressures. With several weeks of summer still ahead, United Way is calling on the community to help ensure families in need have access to healthy food before the new school year begins.
“We are incredibly grateful to every donor, volunteer and community partner who has helped make Summer Eats for Kids possible,” said Lorraine Goddard, CEO of United Way Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent.
“Because of our community’s generosity, thousands of local children are receiving healthy food this summer. But with demand already up 10% over last year, we know many more families need our help. Every donation stays local and helps ensure children have the nourishment they need to enjoy their summer and return to school ready to succeed.”
