Voices of Chatham-Kent: Shaping Our Community’s Future Together 2025

Executive Summary – Voices of Chatham-Kent: Shaping Our Community’s Future Together 2025

Over the past several months, United Way Centraide Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent has been listening—really listening—to the people of Chatham-Kent. Through surveys, community conversations, and one-on-one discussions, nearly 600 local residents shared their experiences, challenges, and hopes for the future.

The result is Voices of Chatham-Kent: Shaping Our Community’s Future Together—a powerful new report that captures what matters most to our community and helps guide the path forward.

What We Heard

Across all corners of Chatham-Kent, residents shared a consistent message: they want real, lasting change. They spoke about the urgent need for:

  • Affordable housing
  • Mental health and addiction support
  • Better access to healthcare
  • Food security and nutrition
  • Support for youth and families
  • Reliable transportation and good jobs

But it wasn’t just about the issues. Residents called for services that are better connected, easier to access, and focused on prevention—not just crisis response. People want solutions that address root causes and support long-term well-being.

What Happens Next

This report isn’t the end—it’s the beginning.

We’re now exploring bold, community-led strategies, including a Cradle to Career (C2C) approach. This model brings organizations, residents, funders, and systems leaders together to support children and families at every stage of life—from early childhood through to career readiness. It’s already showing promising results in places like Harlem and Windsor-Essex—and could be a great fit for Chatham-Kent.

We’re also developing a Neighbourhood Opportunity Index (NOI)—a tool that combines local data and community voice to help us understand where support is needed most and how to track progress over time.

Why This Matters

This work is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: community voice matters.

We believe the people closest to the issues are also closest to the solutions. That’s why your voice will continue to guide the way we invest, partner, and build toward a more equitable and connected Chatham-Kent.

Get Involved

This is your community. Your voice helped shape this report. And your participation will continue to shape what comes next.

💬 Want to be part of the next conversation? Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to get involved, share feedback, and help co-create the future of our community.

Together, we can build a Chatham-Kent where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
