The Journey of United Way in Chatham-Kent: A 76-Year Legacy of Support

Founded in Chatham in 1948, the United Way of Chatham-Kent emerged from a profound sense of community and compassion in the post-war era. Local volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce and the Labour Council came together, inspired by the leadership of Sydney Amherst Morse, then President and General Manager of Union Gas Ltd. This foundational vision laid the groundwork for a powerful tradition of support that has endured for 76 years.

Over the decades, the United Way has evolved significantly, particularly in 1997 when it transitioned from a traditional fundraising model to a community builder through the “Nurture the Future” initiative. This strategic shift introduced an “incubate, nurture, and divest” philosophy, focusing on enhancing the capacity of local programs that had been funded for years. A notable development occurred in 2005 when the Tilbury Information and H.E.L.P. Centre, initially a funded agency, officially became part of the United Way. The Tilbury Information and H.E.L.P. (Help Everyone Live Peacefully) Centre, founded in 1982 by the Concerned Citizens of Tilbury, which operates with a “Whatever It Takes” philosophy. The Tilbury Information and H.E.L.P. Centre provides vital resources such as emergency food assistance, support with social housing applications, resume writing assistance, literacy support, basic income tax filing, computer access for job searches, and referral services to connect individuals with additional resources.

In September of 2007, United Way launched a component of its Leadership Giving Program called the Women’s Leadership Council. At the time is was one of the first of its kind in Canada. Working together, they use their collective power to provide a “hand up” to women and children who want to make positive changes in their lives. Women United is a global movement with one network, one brand and one voice to make social change. On a local level, women of Chatham-Kent are still the key drivers of philanthropy through their time, talents and donations as they address local issues and allocate funds where needed. In 2007, Women United was established in Chatham-Kent, further expanding the organization’s outreach and support for women in the community.

Throughout its history, United Way has remained a steadfast ally, dedicated to uplifting and empowering the most vulnerable residents of Chatham-Kent. All funds raised stay within the community, directly investing in local programs and services.
