On Friday, October 28th and Saturday, October 29th, 2011, United Way/Centraide hosted its 3rd Annual iClimb for United Way at the WFCU Centre Arena. Almost 50 teams participated in the iClimb in support of United Way by climbing over 1,000 steps. Over 400 people from various sectors, including employees from local workplaces, retirees and students, raised funds in support of the 2011 United Way Campaign.
"Once again, our community has stepped up to the challenge to raise $41,000 (and counting!) to support United Way," said Penny Marrett, CEO, United Way. "The iClimb for United Way continues to grow and demonstrate the giving nature of this community," she continued.
Fifteen organizations from the community also took part in the iClimb Health Fair to educate participants, and offer services such as massage therapy, blood pressure testing, and blood typing. Funds raised through the 2011 iClimb for United Way will be invested in United Way's three priority areas: Supporting Basic Needs and Independence, Positioning Kids and Families for Success, and Creating Thriving Neighbourhoods.
United Way officials are delighted with this year's participation. "Last year, pledges and participation doubled from the previous year. This year, we're seeing another huge increase with over 50 teams from local workplaces and schools," stated Lorraine Goddard, Director, Community Impact & Development, United Way. "By participating in iClimb, participants are ensuring that people in our community have access to community gardens, after-school programs, leadership mentoring, and so much more," she added.
Earlier this year, United Way set a goal of $5 million dollars for the 2011 Campaign and hopes to achieve this result by encouraging workplaces to continue supporting the community and engaging individuals to participate in interactive events that promote community involvement, such as the iClimb.
